this file has it all

I just received the file from H^$% that a client is having
trouble with. Need to know how to start trying to fix
this. Doc is 409 pages; was created in Word 2000 but
client has been upgraded to 2002; contains numerous
tables, imbedded object, 25 section breaks with different
headers/footers; graphics; you name it- this file has
it. AS a result, the page numbering is totally messed
up. When you open the file it says there are only 4 pages.
Then you scroll a little, and everything freezes while it
perform repagination. Then it shows 409 pages. Half of
the file shows Page 0, the then it seems to correct itself
if you scroll someplace else. Then it does repagination
again.....

So - how do I start fixing this ? Any ideas ?

If you are using Word 2002, you may want to try the Open
and Repair function by select File/Open and then from the
Open icon, click the arrow and choose Open and Repair.
Word 2002 will try to fix any problem that exist in the
document. You may still have to do manual formatting but
this may be a good start.

In order to get rid of possible corruption, you could try
the following:

1. Display paragraph marks (either press CTRL+SHIFT+8 or
click the View tab of Tools>Options, make sure that
paragraph marks is ticked, and click OK). Paragraph marks
display as ¶.

2. Select the entire document except for the final
paragraph mark, copy and paste it into a new document.

For more information about corruptions, see:

One thing that can cause this sort of behavior is conditional headers
or footers. Look in the headers and footers view for something like

{ IF { PAGE } = { NUMPAGES } large text or other item }

or

{ IF { PAGE } = { SECTIONPAGES } large text or other item }
