"This identity cannot be opened with this version of Entourage"error

Good day,

I have a user running Mac OS X 10.4.9 and MS Office X. After she updated to
10.4.9, she gets the "This identity cannot be opened with this version of
Entourage" error whenever she launched Entourage.

I have performed an advanced rebuild of the database and updated Office to
version 10.1.9, but neither have successfully resolved the issue. If I
remove her identity from the ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office X
Identities folder, Entourage boots normally.

Is the database just whacked? Or will I need to reinstall MS Office?
Reinstalling is my next step but I wanted to see if anyone had a fix for
this issue before I try the reinstall.

Thanks in advance!

John

I have a user running Mac OS X 10.4.9 and MS Office X. After she updated to

Entourage" error whenever she launched Entourage.

"This Identity Cannot Be Opened With This Version of Entourage"
This message usually means, for example, that Entourage is at 11.0, but the
saved database was saved in Entourage 11.2. Since there was a database
format change in there, Entourage 11.0 cannot open a database saved in
Entourage 11.2.

Get the 11.3.3 combo updater and then update to 11.3.4

Hi Diane,

This user is running Office X, not Office 2004. This machine has never had
Office 2004 installed, so I don't know how the identity could have been
saved as an Office 2004 identity.

What is perplexing is everything was running fine until Mac OS X 10.4.9 was
installed on her machine. I have no idea why that update would cause a
change to the database but she says that's the only thing that changed on
her computer recently.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

Also, to follow up, I reinstalled Office X and updated it to 10.1.9 and I
still get the same error message.

I'm trying to locate a user in that office who has Office 2004 to see if
that can read or import this identity. If so, then we'll just buy a copy of
Office 2004. But if Office 2004 fails to assist with this problem, is this
user completely out of luck?

Thanks,

John

The example was given for Entourage 2004, but the solution should also apply
to Entourage X. However I don't remember this happening in Entourage X.
Apple updates can mess with your system in weird ways. See this article: HOW
INSTALLING APPLE'S UPDATES CAN RENDER YOUR MAC UNBOOTABLE AND HOW YOU CAN
PREVENT IT <http://unsanity.org/>

My guess is the update corrupted some Office files. I would use "Remove
Office" then apply the Microsoft Office v. X for Mac 10.1.9 Update.

Run the combo updater from Apple. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files. Several users have reported this fixed some odd
problems they were having with Entourage.

The combo update installer updates Mac OS X 10.4, 10.4.1, 10.4.2, 10.4.3,
10.4.4, 10.4.5, 10.4.6, 10.4.7, or 10.4.8 to 10.4.9.

See previous reply. Does applying the combo updater from Apple help?

Unless the user had the Office 2004 test drive installed, I don't see how
this could be the problem.

I believe the data is still there. It's just a matter of getting the
underlying system files fixed. If you could test in another Office X on a
different computer that should answer your problems, but before you do this,
test in a new User to eliminate the User's folder.

Drag the Microsoft User Data folder to Shared. Create a new User in System
Preferences. Open Entourage with a new blank user first. If it opens. Then
replace with the MUD folder in Shared. If it opens there the problem is in
your User's folder. If it doesn't then it's the database that's corrupted.
Do you have a backup Identity to test?

Hi Diane,

I've been able to workaround the problem.

I tried your suggestions - a new local user account, reinstalling the 10.4.9
Combo Updater - and neither fixed the issue.

I got a copy of the user's identity and was able to import it into Office
2004. Once I got that, I was able to export the user's address book contacts
(this was the information the user needed the most) and forwarded the 170+
e-mail messages in the Inbox to the user. The user is happy, and that's all
that matters.

Still, it's interesting to see this occur after the OS X update. I'll
certainly keep my eyes open for similar occurrences.

Thanks again for your help, and have a great weekend.

I'm having the same problem with v. 10.1.6. I downloaded update
10.1.9, but still receiving the same message
"ThisIdentityCannotBeOpenedWith This Version of Entourage". I am
trying to copy my IDENTITY to a new machine. Both machines have 10.1.9
on them. Any suggestions?

What version of the OS are you running?

Did you copy over your Office folder or did you install from the CD. If you
copied it over, I suggest using "Remove Office" and installing from the CD
then update.

A solution you probably don't want to hear is to upgrade. Not only will it
get you an application that works with the DST updates but it is supported
while Office X is EOL (End of Life). You could download the demo for Office
2004 to see if it can import your data.

It's possible you have database corruption that cannot be fixed. If you can
open Entourage I highly suggest you manually export your data so you can set
up a new Identity.

For options to export your data see:
