i am using outlook 2003 sp3 and about two weeks ago i started receiving this
error on all incoming emails "This item cannot be displayed in the Reading
Pane. Open the item to read its contents." opening the item fails also. i
have checked for ms updates, updated antivirus, enabled/disabled virus scan
for emails, to no avail. does anyone have a suggestion?

I have seen this message show when I receive a form that has been
modified. However, opening the item usually works.

I would try to clean up the forms cache.

To do so, follow these steps:
1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
2. Click the Other tab, and then click Advanced Options.
3. Click Custom Forms.
4. Click Manage Forms.
5. Click Clear Cache.
6. Close all open windows, and then restart Outlook.

If the above does not work, try the following.

Deleting the Forms Cache File:
The Frmcache.dat file is the primary file to delete. The Frmcache.dat
file serves as an index of the individual forms that have been cached
on the computer. Use the following steps to manually delete the
Frmcache.dat file. In addition, these steps delete all of the cached
forms on your computer, which are stored in subfolders of the
Forms folder.

1.. Quit Outlook.
2.. Search the Hard drive (<F3>) to locate the Frmcache.dat file.
(Be sure to check in HIDDEN files on W2K or WXP.)
3.. Delete all that are found from the FIND window.
4.. Open Outlook.

When you restart Outlook, and use a form, the forms cache
is re-created.

Hi Nikki:
thanks for the prompt reply, i tried all of your suggestions and nothing
worked. this just started on July 25th, i can download the headers, but not
the messages. trying to open one, i get the error "Can't open this item"
any other suggestions?

Are you on-line when you try to open the messages?
You may need to check your settings to either
download the whole message, or be sure to be online
when you are trying to see more than just the headers.

i had to delete and rebuild my profile and now everything works. thanks for
your assistance.
