"This item cannot be displayed in the Reading Pane." ...or opened!

This is a message I get in the message box of an email saying:

This item cannot be displayed in the Reading Pane. Open the item to read its
contents.

So I'll try and 'open' it. no go. I try and change the reading pane view and
that doesn't do anything either... please advise!
