Thumb tab index?

Any way to create a thumb tab index for a book using Word? A thumb tab index (at least I think that is what it is called) is what you find on the edge of most dictionary pages which provides a method to rapidly identify one area of the book (ie: The "A")

I'm not sure where to start. I would be printing in the right most margin of every other page. Is there even a way to do this in Word

Thanks for the help in advance.

There is a relatively simple way to do this in Word, but it won't be very
helpful unless your printer can print clear to the edge (or you're going to
trim the pages). Insert a long skinny (single-column) table in a text box or
frame anchored to the header. The position of the text box/frame will need
to be set to Outside relative to Page so it will alternate sides. Give the
table as many rows as you have sections and set the row height to an exact
amount such that the table will fill the document body height. You'll need
to unlink the section headers so that you can fill in a different cell in
each section. You can either just fill the cell with black or a color, or
you can add text (reverse out if you've used a color fill).
