Thumbnail does not appear the same as Visio doc

When I create a Visio document and save the document, a thumbnail view of the
file is created. If I open that file and modify the document and then save
it again, the thumbnail is updated but when I re-open the document, the
changes are not saved. The thumbnail image is updated but the actual file is
not. What could be causing this? I am on Windows 2000 Professional and
Visio Professional 2003.
