Thumbnail images not displaying

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

When viewing files on the desktop or in any folder, the thumbnail that indicates the type of file it is does not show. For example, if it is a Word document, you can tell because it is blue with a "W" on it. Currently, all the documents look the same - there is no thumbnail indicating what program is it associated with. It makes it very hard to quickly scan a folder for specific types of files (Excel, for example).

Select each type of File in the Finer.

Then use Get Info to choose the appropriate Office 2008 application to open
each.

Check the button that says "Change All".

That will re-associate your icons.

Hope this helps

John, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, that is not doing the trick. I have tried to re-set the default in the Get Info screen and it still will not display the icons properly.

Thanks,

Although what John suggested "should" be the charm, I've noticed this
recently myself - in fact I have *some* .docx files showing a different icon
than others, even in the same folder. I don't know if it has something to do
with 10.5 or not (I have 10.5.0 on my MBP but don't se this on my G5 running
10.4.11. Both systems are at the same 12.0.1 update level & both also have
11.4.1 installed). I haven't figured it out yet but will ask for some help &
get back.

Hi JB,

It is possible that what you are seeing is a feature of OS X 10.5 named
"Quicklook" where if the Finder knows how to preview a file, it will replace
the icon with a "Quicklook Preview" of the first page of it. Sometimes
since the Finder icon is too small to show detail, they will all look the
same. Take a look at the following webpages for more info:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/finder.html ("See what you seek" &
screenshots in the showcase)
http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/quicklook.html

Let us know if that's not the issue. If so could you describe what the
icons are looking like now?

Matt,

I fixed it. You need to turn off "show icon preview" in the view options for the folder. Duh!

Seems obvious, but I talked to 10 people that all had the same problem and everyone was overlooking the obvious.
