Thumbnails lost

Please help! I am trying to display thumbnails on left side of my documents.
It
displayed at one time and then stopped displaying. Document's map is
working well, but thumbnails are not. On the view menu the check box for
showing thumbnails is grayed out. I use Office 2007 (system XP Windows)
Question : How can I turn on thumbnail previews now?

in what view are you? I see Thumbnails are grayed out when I switch to
Web Layout view (understandably, as there are no "pages" on a web page
per se).
