Thumbs.db - Trying to turn off the cache thumbnails -

L

Lae135

Hi, I read the great repsonses on why not to use the Windows Explorer in your
webpage and how to turn off the cache in order to stop the error message (I
get the same error message). However, I guess I need more instruction on
where to find the Tools>folder Options - View Tab - files and folders section
to find the "Do not cache thumbnails.

I went into Internet Explorer and couldn't find anything like that under the
tools tab....

My error message states the thumbs.db file is connected to a specific
webpage (that I have framed with my company's webpage - with permission :) )
I looked everywhere for within my site and I cannot find it anywhere. The
only one I found, I deleted. The message states it is in
arealinks_files/thumbs.db

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!! Linda

1) Use Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) to turn off Thumbs caching
Tools> Folder Options - View (Tab) - Advanced Files and Folders section (Do not cache thumbnails)

2) Your thumbs.db looks like it is in what is called a thicket
- a folder (arealinks_files) associated w/ a file like arealinks.htm
(created when you use Save As from the browser or other MSO tools or VML)
- thickets are hidden by FP and the only way you can delete it in FP is to delete the associated file
(otherwise you need to try using a 3rd party FTP to find & delete it)

I've all of a sudden ended up with thumbs.db folders all over the place.
Can I safely delete these?

When I drag the Thumbs folder on the desktop down to the recycle bin, I get
an error message telling me Thumbs is a system file and that if I remove it,
my computer or one of my programs may no longer work correctly.

There are also Thumbs files in several other folders. When I try to delete
them, I get a message that says "Your are attempting to open a data base
file. These files are used by the OS and by various programs. Editing or
modifying could damage your system."

Where'd they come from, can I delete them & can I use the info given below
to stop getting more of them?

Thanks

They come from viewing folders with Windows Explorer in thumbnail
view. The information below will stop them being created, and they
can be safely deleted - try a search in Windows Explorer, thumbs.db as
the filename to search for, and include hidden and system files.
Delete the lot from the search results.
The consequence of deleting the thumbs.db files is that the thumbnails
will take a few seconds longer to appear in a folder containing
several hundred images.

To avoid having the thumbs.db file in your web folders, do not open the folders outside of FP in
Windows Explorer or My Computer.

Delete the thumbs.db files from within FP, which how you should always manage the content of your
web, never via other applications.

I've never opened the folders outside of FP - that's why I couldn't
understand where these came from.

Thanks for the info.

Thumbs deleted, checked the don't cache thumbs - so I should be in good
shape now.

Thanks everyone!
