Thumbs.db?

W

wewak11

One of my sites has only clip art and animations, but FP2003 has generated a
thumbs.db file. The problem, however (which only began today) is publishing
changes, which always went smoothly.
Half-way through the publish, I get the message: "Server error: The page
animal_files/thumbs.db has been modified by wewak11 on march 5 2005
07:52:40+1000. This effectively aborts the publish (although I've noticed
most of the changes have taken effect when viewed on the web.
Should I delete all thumbs.db files? As always, thanks a bunch in advance,
cheers, Graeme

FrontPage does not generate the thumbs.db file - Windows Explorer
does.
If you view your images in Windows Explorer and use thumbnail view,
then thumbs.db will be generated.
Only view your web files with FrontPage. Delete all instances of
thumbs.db

Since the above will be impossible to achieve, set up Win Explorer to
not generate the thumbnail cache'
In Windows Explorer, use Tools->Folder Options - View tab
In the Files and Folders section tick the box "Do not cache
thumbnails", then click OK

This will not delete the thumbnail caches, but will prevent them being
regenerated.

FP does not generate thumbs.db files
You do (thru Windows Explorer) when you browse the site folders in Windows Explorer in thumbnail view and have Windows Explorer set
to cache thumbnails
Turn it off in Windows Explorer using Tools Folder Options View
- Select Do Not Cache Thumbnails

Many servers will block a thumbs.db file thus causing FP Publish to fail
After turning off the thumbnail caching delete all thumbs.db in your FP web and republish

that is somewhat drastic solution and will mean he cannot see thumbnails in
the rest of his computer folders? I often look in the web folders for
images and rather prefer to have thumbnails already cached it's faster.

When You publish just set it in options to not publish files of type .db.
Or right click on them and click DO NOT PUBLISH
That way it only affects FP not your entire system

Incorrect
You will still be able to see thumbnails anywhere,
- they will just be created each time since cache will not be used

Or just don't view your FP Web folders in Thumbnail view

PS
Your approach won't work since some FP folders are not visible in FP to set the do not publish
- like the _derived one used by themes / nav bars is not visible in FP
- or any thicket folders
