Thunderbird attatchments

I am using Mozilla Thunderbird and am having a problem opening Word
attachments. When I try to open an attachment nothing happens but if I
copy the word document to the desktop then open Word then open the
document from within Word, I get a message saying that I need a
convertor or conversion add-on and asks me if I want to install one. I
have installed the conversion add-on but there is still no change. I can
not open the attachment to where I have the english text I want. I get
garbled letters. I *am* using Word 2002. Do I need to update my Word or
use a differnt email program to view my Word attachments?

I have yet to find out what the people are using to email me with or
what version of Word they have.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Note, you should _never_ open Word attachments from your email program. Save
them to disk and open them from their saved location.

Re the first sentence: I know the general answer is to avoid malware, but am
curious what the difference is between opening directly and save and open,
assuming one is running some decent protective stuff.

First, when you open directly from the email program you have no idea where
your attachment is saved on your hard drive. If you make changes, chances
are they will be lost.

I just mailed myself a Word doc using Thunderbird 1.07.
No problem opening it from within Thunderbird, using Word 2003.

I agree that files should not be opened without first saving to disk, but
that's not got nothing to do with viri, rather, one should try to eliminate
the complication of having an intermediate app in the process.

Not if one uses File | Save As.
