TIF Files not Recognized

I am having trouble inserting .tif files in documents in Office 97 and
Publisher 98. Neither program will recognize the .tif file extension.
I receive an error message that says " This file is not recognized as a MIX
or Flashpix file, or it is already in use."
I have been able to work with these files in Publisher 98 in the past with
no trouble. Tried re-installing PUB98, but it did not help.

Could be the .tiff filter has gone bad. Not all .tiff images are the same, does
this happen with all your .tiff images? Try this in Publisher, insert, new
drawing, when the drawing area opens, insert, picture from file. If that doesn't
work, rename your .tiff filter (TIFFIM32.FLT) to TIFFIM32.OLD, drag a new
instance from your setup disk. The filters are in a folder similar to this:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Grphflt

Thank you for your reply.
I tried a fresh copy of the TIFFIM32.FLT filter as you suggested, but it did
not help.
The Insert Picture File dialog box does not seem to "see" any .tiff files of
any kind in a folder when browsing for an image, and "Tagged Image Format" is
not an option in the file type box.

Hi Webwood,

In Word, in Tools=>Options=>General, turn on the 'confirm conversions at open' dialog, then close Word, restart it and use the 'All
files' setting in Insert=>Picture from file and select a .TIF file to see if Word will recognize it.

If the TIFF file is 48 bits, it may not be recognized.

Hi Bob,
OK, did what you said and tried it; in Word using the 'All Files' setting
the .tif files are visible. But after choosing one to insert, the Convert
File dialog box does not show a Tagged Image Format option, selecting any
other file type option gives an error message.

These are 2-bit files. Am I doomed to converting them all into another
format ? :-(
