TIF image degraded in Word 2007 Document

I am trying to insert TIF files into a Word 2007 document. They insert fine
initially, but once saved the image is degraded. If I use Word 1997 this is
not a problem. I need to use the TIF files because they have good resolution
for having a small file size. I am working in a large document with many,
many images. Can anyone help me?
