Tiger - Entourage losing track of received mail, downloads again

It seems after waking from sleep, Entourage 2004 loses its memory of files
downloaded and then downloads them again from the server. Problem started
with Tiger. Is this problem related to spotlight?

Spotlight is responsible for some problems with corruptions to Entourage if
MS User folder is not excluded:

Spotlight cripples Entourage in Tiger: a fix is offered. May 5, 2005 --
Several readers verified the problem of Entourage in Tiger getting stuck in
"spinning beach ball" mode, which we reported on Tuesday.

Joe Selvaggi blames it on Spotlight and has a suggestion:

I am experiencing the spinning ball problem in Entourage since upgrading to
Tiger. There a corresponding sound (like frantic memory/ disk swapping
activity) coming from my PowerBook.
Apparently it's Spotlight trying to index the Entourage Mail DB. Tell
Spotlight to ignore the

Microsoft User Data folder (Users > Documents > Microsoft User Data)

should do the trick, or at least it appears to work.
Entourage 2004: Attachment corruption An issue we've been dealing with
in-house has now been confirmed by a handful of MacFixIt readers.

It appears that on some Mac OS X 10.4 installations, Microsoft's Entourage
2004 is no longer able to properly handle some incoming attachments. When the
user attempts to download the attachment, or open it from within Entourage,
they are provided with a message by the host application (the application
opening the attachment) that the file is not recognized or is not in a valid
format.

Spotlight? What would that have to do with it? It's about as likely to
be related to the alignment of Mars and Jupiter. m.

Am I being thick? How do I get Spotlight to ignore the MUD folder?
I can't see an exclude list in the preferences!

Thanks HUGH

System Preferences/Spotlight click the Privacy tab. Click the + button
navigate to the MUD folder (or, in my case, Office 2004 Identities,
since I have stuff in my MUD folder I want Spotlight to see). Click
Choose.

Sorry to play the hard-nosed skeptical empiricist rationalist here, but
I'm using Entourage on Tiger, I have not told Spotlight to ignore
anything, and I'm not having this problem, and besides - what is it that
we are supposed to imagine Spotlight would be doing to the database that
could possibly harm it? If you want me to believe this "explanation" you
have to at least tell a plausible story as to what might be happening
here: "Joe Selvaggi sez" in some rumor-mongering web site doesn't cut
it. m.

Matt, this problem is being followed on MacFixit, which I don't believe is a
" rumor-mongering web site", but a good help to fixing problems
encountered.

Since the link isn't public on MacFixit, I gave one of their references.

I think the difference here is corruption vs. problems.

Yes, Spotlight trying to index the database can cause slowdowns, known
issue, known fix (though I guess not everyone is seeing it). But that's a
totally different issue than Spotlight being "responsible for some problems
with corruptions to Entourage", which is the original statement that Matt
called nonsense. Most people wouldn't call slowdown a corruption.

It's more than that: Spotlight doesn't write to the files it reads, so
what could it possibly do to the database to harm it? I'm not saying
it's impossible, but I'd want to hear a convincing story of what is
supposed to be happening here, and so far I haven't heard one - I
haven't heard any story at all. m.

Okay Matt, I see your reasoning.
What might cause Entourage to lose track of mail received?

I don't know. It could be a bug in Entourage (something about how it
interacts with the server) or it could be something external interfering
with the database (like a virus checker - they are mostly viruses
themselves if you ask me). I'm not seeing the phenomenon so I have no
way even to guess. m.
