One of the MacBU employees said an update is on the way, but I don't believe
it's specifically for Tiger, nor to fix speed issues.

For Entourage, it helps prevent beachballing if you tell Spotlight not to
try to index the Entourage databases (System Prefs, Spotlight, Privacy).

Otherwise, slower response times do not appear to be an across-the-board
problem--I think I've even seen some people post that the programs are
snappier--so it would be pretty hard for MS to write a patch to solve the
issues that you are seeing on your machine.

Your best bet is probably to browse the program-specific newsgroups and see
what fixes are being suggested for Tiger-related problems, and see whether
other people are having the same *specific* problems you are. If multiple
people are having the same exact problem, there might be a hope of
identifying and fixing it.

Thanks,

I am having similar problems with Word and Entourage. I have to force quit
daily and often get a message that says a Word document I try to open from
the icon is corrupt. I then open it from the FILE, OPEN command with no
problem.

I'm having issues with Excel and Word in bootup. There is a font
optimization routine that runs, scanning active fonts and reporting
they're all corrupt. This is very troubling, as I can't even get the
software up and running without a 15-20 scan routine.
I'm running Tiger with Office 2004 on a G4, 400mHz, 256Mb RAM, 60Gb
drive.

That one is a known issue, no fix yet but partial workarounds. Make sure you
have no duplicate fonts, and try deleting the system font caches--for some
reason Word is reading them wrong--though the problem may re-appear after
you shut down and restart. You'll find more information, lots of reports
and suggestions, on the MacWord newsgroup. Search for Tiger and font, there
have been a number of threads and I'm not sure of what the most current
advice is.

You might want to search the web, by the way, about another issue--the
impression I get from various articles is that 256MB RAM is not really
enough to have a pleasant experience running OS X alone (never mind adding
Word on top). At least that was what I read re Panther--since Apple upped
their default configurations, I strongly doubt Tiger is any better.
