tilde in document name

Don't know which category to place this so I placed it
here...
I have Docs Open and when I receive an attachment from
someone in Lotus Notes, I open the attachment. The best
practice is to save the document to DocsOpen at that
point, however, if I save that word document using
File/Save instead of using the proper method, I get a
number with a tilde ~ in front of the number. Why is this
tilde there?
thank you.

for further clairfication: After launching the document
from Lotus Notes into Word, I am choosign File/Save from
Word and that is where I am seeing ~2345676 [a different
number appears each time I save]. My question is, why is
the tilde in front of the assigned document #?
Thanks.

This is a temporary file created by Word. It creates one every time you
save, and they're deleted when you close the document. If you don't want to
be bothered with them, change your "Files of type" setting from "All Files"
to "All Word Documents." Note, however, that the ~$<filename>.doc file is
the "owner" file that is created when you open a document and deleted when
you close the document. It prevents other users from accessing the file
while you have it open for editing.
