Time recording

we are using 2007 web access, for one project of many small tasks we wish to
simply record actual time spent and an actual finish date when applicable but
dont want entry of time to amend %complete or to assume a completion date or,
indeed any other fields. Is this possible? The background for this is to
create an earned value using only completed tasks.

I'm not really sure I totally understand your question. When users enter
Actual Work on a task, this causes the system to calculate % Work Complete
for the task. If users enter Actual Work on a daily basis on the My Tasks
page, and then enter Actual Work that is less than the planned Work, then
this will cause the system to change the planned Finish date of the task.
Let us know if this helps.

Hi, thanks for trying to help.

The full picture the organisation has project server and wishes to use it
for visibility etc. the project I am load to Ms project has many ('00s) small
tasks down to as low as half a days work. The project director has a
production line concept and basically wants to measure time spent on each
when they are finished. His aim is the to compute earned value based only on
completed tasks. He thinks that concentrating on completing the individual
tasks will keep the project on track. My role is to transfer his to-do list
into a project plan for visibility to the organisation.

I am now looking at creating a custom field of true completion date on the
my tasks page and ignoring Project's dates then extracting data to compute
earned value.

I would probably agree with "thats not how to manage projects" type comments
bu hey ho we have to try to satisfy management.

Tony:

I don't see how using the system correctly inhibits your EV calculations,
which you can do using the built-in capabilities or by creating your own set
of calculations.
