Time Sheet Entry

How can I accomplish the following?

I assign task ABC to start 01/01/05 with duration of 5 days ending 01/05/05
I assign one resource 100% giving me Work of 35 hours (5 x 7 hours a day)

I publish the task

The resource now enters 30 hours of time on 01/07/05 using weekly time entry
in PWA timesheet.

This is submitted for approval.

I now update project progress and would like to see the following:

Task ABC to start 01/01/05 with duration of 5 days ending 01/05/05
Remaining work is 5 hours, Actual Work is 30 hours

I do not want project to automatically adjust my start, finish or duration.
I would like to make the determination as to what is happening to this task,
perhaps it is finished 5 hours early or perhaps there is a 5 hour part that
we can defer to a different time all together.

Thanks,

Grant.

Grant -

It appears then that you would probably like to use Fixed Duration task
type. Using weekly time entry, Project makes some assumptions that you
started and ended on time, but at the same time, you would want to set
a baseline and define a view that shows the baseline dates.

The remaining work will automatically calculate based on Work - Actual
Work, so if a resource enters 30 hours against a 35 hour task, it will
show 5 hours remaining.

The problem, of course, is that the task won't show 100% complete in
that case, so the PM would have to adjust the % Complete.

Team Members should be trained to include a note when they finish a
task with hours remaining, as most organizations train people to
indicate that a task has completed early by changing the Remaining Work
value to 0.

Hope this helped,

Mark,

Thank you for your reply. I have tried to use a Fixed Duration task however
this results in project telling me that the time entry will violate the fixed
duration constraint so project will automatically extend the end date. You
have no choice but to press OK to accept this modification. You then can go
back to your plan and change the finish date back and project will auto
correct the rest of the fields. This is just an extra step that is very
labour intensive.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Grant.
