Timed Out

Here's my Problem; at least 40% of the time I connect to Netzero Mail server
I get the error message, Timed Out. I use Outlook 2002, WindowsXP
SP2.....and I have a total of 3 E-mail Accts Created in Outlook. Netzero and
2 other accts, neither of which are Netzero accts. I never get Timed Out on
the other 2 Non-Netzero accts. I have, deleted and re-created the Netzero
acct. I have turned off Norton's Mail scanning, incoming and Outcoming. I
have switched to Outgoing Port 587 (from 25) as suggested by Netzero. I
have, deleted the other 2 mail accts so Netzero would be the ONLY e-mail
connecting. I have even turned off Norton's Firewall....and done of these
changes have fixed the problem, I continue to get Timed Out on about 40% of
my Connections to Netzero.

Netzero basically has been of no help. They simply provide what appears to
be scripted replies....advising me how to create the Mail acct in Outlook.
If I didn't have Netzero created Properly I would not get
connected......ever. They suggested I increase the default wait time, that
of course only prolonged the wait times. The message I get is the Netzero
Server could not be found.

Suggestions?

denmarfl,
I expect this is a paid email acct for Netzero. In the advance settings tab
for the email acct in Outlook; change the time out value, something closer
to 5 mins, maybe a little more. You might have to uninstall your Norton
software, and reinstall it using the "Custom" feature, without installing
the email scanning feature. Sometimes just turning off the feature is not
enough.

Yes, it is a paid e-mail acct. As I wrote, the other 2 e-mail accts that I
access at the same time using Outlook 2002, they never Time Out. And, when I
connect with Netzero sucessfully, it connects in seconds. As I wrote, I only
get Timed Out Connections on about 40% of my connections with Netzero. If
this was being caused by Norton Scanning feature, you would think it would
happen all the time, and, also affect the other 2 e-mail accts as well.
Also, I have turned Norton Completely off, and I still get Netzero Timed Out
responses from Netzero....about the same frequency.

denmarfl,
1. Even with email scanning from Norton turned off, it can cause problems
with the connection to your mail server. It needs to be completely
uninstalled. The prefered fix is to completely uninstall Norton. Do a
"Custom" reinstall, that does not include the email scanning feature. If
your AV software is up to date, it should catch any infected mail at the
time you try to read it..
a. Its like having an anchor attached to a rowboat, even if you pull it
out of the water, if it's big and heavy enough, it might slow you down
anyway, when you try to row the boat.
b. The other two (2) accts'mail servers may not be as sensitive as the
Netzero mail servers, and not be affected by the Norton software..

2. The Netzero mail servers may have some technical problems, causing the
timeouts. Their problems may not affect the servers that Netzero uses to
connect you to the Internet, since they are probably a different set of
servers all together.
a. I have had hotmail accts that had server problem constantly a few
years back, and if you look at different MS newgroups, it would effect some,
and not others. Also would affect some MSN users, because they had their
mail accts on the same troubled HotMail servers.

3. You might be forced to go to Netzero webmail interface and see if the is
a corrupted mail message, usually a piece of SPAM or large message, that is
blocking the download. Especially if it is the first message that is being
downloaded, so you will need to find the message and delete it, before the
rest of the messages can be downloaded.

Thanks ...it is preplexing to say the least. When I get timed out I have
checked Netzero's Webmail and there has never been a large message, and when
I connect, all messages I saw out there always come into Outlook. That to me
rules out the Large file as the hangup. I really think this is a Netzero
problem......and I plan to keep after them. Norton has been running on my PC
well before I went to the Netzero paid Acct so I could use Outlook, and for 5
weeks there were no problems. Its just the past 2 weeks that this problem
has surfaced....and I have not changed/modified/altered anything on my PC.
