timing diagram

I want to draw a timing diagram, something like x-axis
will be the work items and the y-axis will be the period
in the year(like 20/7/03 to 31/8/03).

Now my graph would show the red rectangle blocks spanning
from one date to another for each work item

How do I acheive this in word? Any sample links will be
useful.

What you're looking for is a Gantt chart, so you might have some luck
searching for that term. Although it might be possible to force Microsoft
Graph to do this, it would definitely be better to have a dedicated add-in
for the purpose and might even be easier to construct by hand than to
manipulate Graph into.
