Tip on Adding Office 2008 Icon to the Dock

One of the first things I did after installing Office 2008 was to poof
away the various Office 2008 icons from the dock. I like being able to
access the Office applications from the dock - just did not care for the
clutter. I replaced the icons with the Microsoft Office 2008 folder by
dragging it from the Applications folder to the dock. This works great
but you wind up with generic looking Leopard folder icon on the dock.

The following is how to add the Office 2008 icon to the dock. First,
open your Microsoft Office 2008 folder and create a new folder named
/Office 2008 Icon. It is very important that you use the / as the first
character in the folder name. Now Get Info on your Microsoft Office
2008 folder and the new /Office 2008 Icon folder and have them displayed
side by side on the desktop. Mouse over (select) the icon at the top of
the Microsoft Office 2008 Get Info and copy the icon to the clipboard.
Now mouse over (select) the generic icon on the /Office 2008 Icon
folder and paste (Cmd-V) the already copied icon to the /Office 2008
Icon folder Get Info. Close both Get Info folders and you are done. The
Office 2008 icon should be on the dock. If not, poof the dock folder
and drag a fresh version of the Microsoft Office 2008 folder to the dock.

This is not as hard as I make it sound.

Hi,

Bah? You don't need to do that; drag and drop it to the stacks area of the
dock, right click on the icon, click on 'display as folder' and voila,
you'll have the Microsoft Office 2008 branded folder in the dock.

I don't know why you jumped through all those hoops when it wasn't even
required.

Matthew,

Sorry, I don't understand what you are doing? When I right-click a dock
folder there is no option to 'display as a folder'

Help.... please clarify what you did??

Yes, I know the enemy of good is better but I did not like the look of
the Microsoft Office 2008 folder icon on the dock so I change it by
leaching the icon from MS install disc. Seems to look better on the
dock than the standard folder icon. Let me know if you find a better
looking dock icon for Office 2008.

Matthew,

Thanks for the tip. Just tied it an it works but wiped out my leached
(better looking) icon and put the standard MS Office folder icon on the
dock.

I need to play with this some more. About the time I think I understand
what's going on....something new comes along and changes what I thought
was true.

Standard folder icons go the dock with the display as a folder but you
need to create and use an /icon folder to display custom icons.

Well, for me Entourage is always open so it has a permanent place on my
Dock. For the other Office applications, I use Launch Bar to access. I type
two letters using Launch Bar and it opens. QuickSilver and Butler are two
others that do the same thing.
