tmp files on desktop

I have a new computer, running Office 2007 on Vista Business 32-bit. I have
run the Office update through Windows Updater.

When I save a file in Word, sometimes a piece of the desktop shows through,
with a greyed-out ~WRL0001.TMP, leaving a hole in the Word document. To get
rid of the hole and tmp file, I have to minimize the file, then maximize it
again.

Also, when I alter a Word or Excel file on my desktop, it sometimes moves
over to the top left corner of the desktop, shifting the locations of other
documents on the desktop.

Hmmm. That's something I was taught back in Office 97/Windows 98 days, and it
worked fine then, worked through XP, but is no longer a good idea in Vista or
Office 2007?

It's never been a good idea. The desktop can be risky, not to mention that
it gets very cluttered. There's a reason for having a My Documents folder,
but of course you don't have to use it; you can select any folder you like
as the default folder for Word.
