tmp files

When I open a Word document and make any changes and then
save and close it, a tmp file appears in the folder. It
doesn't automatically disappear, so I have hundreds of tmp
files in my folder, is there a setting or something that
needs to be changed so that the tmp files no longer appear
in my folder??

For a start you need to set the Windows temporary folder to a specific
location. How you do this will depend on OS, but with Windows XP, the
setting is under Control Panel > system > advanced > environment variables.
I guess this is an older Windows system as XP is quite good at housekeeping.
However, you can (and should) delete all these tmp files - see also

The kind of temp files I think Roger is talking about is the ~WRL files that
are created in the document folder, one for every save (or every save after
the first if you have backups enabled). I'm not sure whether we've ever
figured out why they sometimes aren't deleted when the document is closed,
though of course folder permissions would be relevant. Wait--wasn't that one
of the problems that had to do with SMB packet signing?
