.tnef file extensions

I recently started receiving emails with attachments
id'ed as msword ".tnef" files. I can't open/read the files
using any app I have loaded, including MS Office Suite,
Corel Suite, Acrobat or anything else.

What are these files and what app do I need to open, or
what do I tell the sender regarding forwarding these
attachments. (i.e. saving as text only first, or
something) ???
