TO ALL - IMPORTANT REMINDER

Just a reminder, folks:

Microsoft NEVER sends updates by email or as posts to the newsgroups.
Most of the MS newsgroups discourage attachments of any sort.

So for your own protection, it's safe to assume that

IF A NEWSGROUP MESSAGE HAS AN ATTACHMENT, IT'S A VIRUS

You'll also see messages asking you to click on links. Use your best
judgement, but if they're links to anything but HTML files, don't go there.
Anything with an EXE or SCR extension (among others) is almost surely going
to bite you.

thanks, Steve,but:
I use outlook express. How do I know BEFORE I click on it, that it has an
attachment. Now, I just have not clicked on any message that says update,
etc. How do I know if there is an attachment as the paper clip deal does
not show up like it does in regular email until after I highlight a message
to read it. ???
thanks

I have a rule in OE set to delete any message over a certain number of
lines. That seems to whack most of the attachments. There are also a
number of security features you can turn on (Tools, Options, Security)

Just viewing a message with an attachment generally won't cause any problems
.... it's running the attachment that'll get you.

When just viewing the list of posts, go to View > Columns and select
Attachment from the list. Use the Move Up and Move Down buttons to position
the new column where you want. Now when you view the list, you'll see a
paperclip if there is an attachment. You can also set up a column for Size
and that will help you see the total size of the message. Anything over
5-10 KB is probably Spam, html, or a message with an attachment.
