To hell with your updates, I'm going to check out openoffice.org.

The subject says it all, doesn't it?

All updates failed. My only troubleshooting step is going to be a uninstall.

Ok

Personally I think Open Office has a sloppy user interface and is not worth
the trouble of a download even if it is free.

If you want the Office 2003 look this one's the way to go.
They also seem to offer more formulas in the spreadsheet program than excel

I have to admit I'm a bit suprised by your reply. I didn't know there was
another alternative. I've just grown a bit tired of obscure M$ error
messages, c'mon, give me something to troubleshoot with. UPDATE FAILED is
nowhere near sufficient to me. I've REALLY been disapointed with M$ lately.
I'm ready for something new. Thanks for pointing it out.

You're Welcome

There are plenty of alternatives to Office you just have to look around most
offer programs that are compatible with MS Office.

It's easy to upset with MS but have you tried getting help with the problem
you are having with updating? Have you consider maybe that it might be your
internet connection, internet traffic or maybe you might need to do some
clean up on your computer as junk will accumulate over time and cause
problems with programs and your computer?
