To Many recipients_distribution list

I receive a message from the "System Administrator" almost imediately after I send a e mail with one address in the "to:" field and a distribution list in the BCC field. I thought that I would try reducing the number of contacts in the list(down to 10) and that did not help. The message returned to me contains all of the recipients that the message did not go out to with the information "452 4.5.3 Too many recipients".
I couldn't find anything on the maximum allowed number of recepients.
Also I run Norton antivirus 2003 with mail scanning on.
