To rectify Word causing error in USER.EXE

When I try and open Word the programme just hangs, or if I click on a
completed document to open it Word hangs. At times do get an error message
WORD has caused an Error in USER.EXE. Have uninstalled and reinstalled
Microsoft Office, with no change in result. Any ideas any body please?

Starting to talk to myself now it seems.......... I had posted my message

Things seem to be going alright at this time. Had to change the Normal.dot
to old and it is sorted. Phew
