To use SharePoint or not to use SharePoint for individual projects

What do you say to folks who proclaim "We don't need a SharePoint site
created for individual projects, we'll just manually create a
SharePoint site for each team and create folders to upload project
stuff into. That way we won't have to go hunting around for documents
- they'll all be in one place".

For one, you lose the capability to capture issues and risks. In
other good reasons not to follow this appoach or TO follow it?

Please be candid and the more data/examples, the better.

I don't see how you think you'll lose the documents as they'll be in WSS !

With a list of sharepoint site on the PWA homepage along with SharePoint
Server search, there is no need to go to these lengths. If anything, you'll
be at a disadvantage of doing it this way as you'll lose the ability to

control issues and risks
deliverables
automatically control user access
easily prune old site
restore individual sites

IMO, I'd stick to the way it was designed.
