TOC but no page numbers

Alpruett

I may be asking the impossible since I'm sure it's not a frequent request,
but I want to have a portion of my Table of Contents without page numbers. I
have some appendices at the end of the report that I want to be listed in the
TOC but I don't want to have page numbers associated with them. My only
option may be to just have it as regular text following the TOC, but I'd like
to it automatically update if I should add any more appendices or change any
names. Thanks for any help you can provide.

You can achieve a "reasonable facsimile" of your desired result by using
cross-references, but it will take a bit of fiddling.

First, you cannot use a Heading style to identify your appendices, as these
will automatically be added to the TOC with page numbers no matter what you
do. Instead create a specific style that looks like a Heading but has the
Outline level in the Paragraph formatting set to Body Text.

Next, wrap the text of your appendices' "Headings" in bookmarks, taking care
not to include the paragraph marks at the end of each line. If you do include
the paragraph mark inside the bookmark, an extra line will appear when you do
the next bit.

Finally, at the bottom of your TOC, insert cross-references to each of these
bookmarks making sure that you insert a reference to the bookmark text. This
should insert a Ref field that displays the "Heading" text of each appendix.

Now if you should make a change to one of the "Headings", this change should
be reflected in the associated cross-reference. Keep in mind that you will
have to update the fields somehow when something does change, but of course
you would have to do this with the TOC as well. The only other thing to be
aware of is that you have to be careful to ensure that any changes you make
to any of the "Headings" must be inside the bookmark. I can't count the
number of times that I've set up a cross-reference and then added something
afterwards only to have my cross-reference become a total mess!

You can omit page numbers from any given level of a TOC using the \n switch
as described in http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/TOCTips.htm and
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/TOCSwitches.htm. The trick is to use a
different style for your appendix headings (perhaps you're already doing
this) and assign it to an unused TOC level (in the Table of Contents Options
dialog, type the desired number beside the style). Then modify the format of
that TOC style (let's say it's TOC 4 if you're already showing three levels
of headings, with page numbers, using TOC 1-3) to be the same as TOC 1, 2,
or 3 (if desired) so it will match, say, the chapter headings. You'll then
use \n 4-4 in the TOC field to omit page numbers for that level.
