This is usually a result of opening the document in Reading Layout view
(Full Screen Reading view in Word 2007). There are three solutions to the
problem, and if you are the sender, there is nothing you can do except
suggest that the recipient implement one of the solutions:
1. Disable Reading Layout view. The setting is on the General tab of Tools |
Options in Word 2003 and earlier and in Office Button | Word Options |
Popular in Word 2007. This will allow you (or the recipient) to open an
attachment directly without its opening in this view.
2. Don't open attachments directly. Instead, save the attachment to the HD
and then open it. Reading Layout view is automatic only for attachments
opened directly.
3. After opening an attachment in Reading Layout/Full Screen Reading view,
switch to Print Layout view and use F9 to update the TOC.
