TOC - Font changes within a level

I had typed out my question and my computer froze up when I hit "post". I
don't see it and it has been a while, so I will try again.

I have a TOC with 2 levels, heading 1 is for TOC 1 and heading 2 is for TOC
2. I formatted all of the styles using the style formatter. Everything is
good, worked out nicely, EXCEPT my TOC level 2 has a mixture of small caps
and all caps (about 1/2 and 1/2). Does anyone know what I did wrong?

You probably applied Small Caps and/or All Caps to your Heading 2 paragraphs
as direct formatting. You need to decide which you prefer and then make that
formatting part of the style. You can then format TOC 2 to follow that style
or have different formatting.

The small caps was something I was playing around with in my TOC 2 a while
back, but now I can't seem to get rid of it. My Heading 2 paragraphs were
not directly formatted at all. It just seems that if I tell Word I want my
TOC level 2 to be a certain way and have set everything up properly, it
should do that and not be all mixed up.

Is there a way if I can tell if something was directly formatted?

I guess I can unlink the TOC and manually do it, I was just trying to do it
"properly".

Okay, I see what you mean. I took the Heading 2 style and turned off the
"all caps". Some of them are not all caps! I will go through and correct
all of them and see if my TOC updates properly.

Wow! I have been working all day on this, and it took one quick question
from the experts.

If you have applied All Caps as direct formatting rather than as part of the
style, then this will show up in the TOC. And if you type headings with Caps
Lock on (instead of using All Caps formatting in the style), this also will
show up in the TOC.

You are absolutely correct!!! I thought I had typed them all using all caps,
but when I turned it off in my style, guess what. Mish Mash. I am not sure
how that happened. I have CONSISTENTLY made sure all 750 headings are
exactly the same. No direct formating. My TOC is perfect! Now. . . Can I
change my TOC level 2 to small caps? Or do I have to unlink it.

The formatting of the TOC styles is entirely independent of the formatting
of your headings. By default, it is Times New Roman, lowercase, but you can
modify it just as you can any other style. It inherits the capitalization of
the headings, however, so when you have All Caps applied to your headings,
it's useful from time to time to toggle that off so you can see that you
have properly typed them in Caps and lowercase (which will be reflected in
the TOC). If you want TOC 2 to be Small Caps only (not Caps and Small Caps),
then you should type your headings all in lowercase (no caps), letting the
All Caps formatting of the style take care of the caps.

Ten-four! I think I will leave that for another time and just tuck this in
my hat for the time being. I would have to type all 750 entries from all
caps to no caps. I understand perfectly what you are saying, though.

Chrisk, you would not need to retype the erroneous Caps to no caps, use
Shft+F3 to toggle through the capitalisation options.
If the manual formatting is still on the text, you can clear this by
selecting the text and pressing Shift+Spacebar.

Unless Chinese is enabled on his computer, in which case Shift-
Spacebar switches to Chinese -- and even though there's a place to
override this in the Windows language setup, it doesn't stick. It's
been reported here that Shift-Spacebar even switches to a Chinese font
if Chinese is _not_ enabled on the computer!

Use Ctrl-Shift-Z to clear manual formatting instead.

Great idea!! I went to the Heading 1 and then selected "select all" from my
reveal formatting pane. It selected all of my Heading 1 entries. Then I
pressed Shift+F3 to toggle through the different cases until I got to title
case. All of them were changed at once. Then I went and changed my Heading
1 default to "all caps".

I thought I was going to have to format each heading individually. This
saved me a LOT of work. TOC is now in small caps. Perfect. Thank you for
the suggestion!!!
