TOC & header/footer layout

I' created some months ago a text document (Ofice Word 2003) in which the
header and footer uses a table to make a more custom layout. When I finished
the document I created the TOC without any problem.
Today I've added one chapter to this doc and tried to generate the TOC again
using the "update field" functionality. Everything seems to go right untill I
saved the doc and reopened it. The tables used in the header and footer were
messed up and the same happened with some tables in the doc.
I've already deleted the TOC and create it again, changed the layout of the
header and footer etc. but the problem stays the same.
It is anyhow very strange that I can create the TOC and change things in the
headers and footers of the different sections without causing any trouble in
the docs' layout. Only when I save it (using the same or another file name -
it doesn't matter) and reopen the file it's messed up.
Does anyone know what the problem can be and how to fix it? Is it possible
that the file size is to large (about 18Mb)?

Hi Stefaan:

It's never a good idea to use tables in the header or footer. If you do, it
is likely to corrupt the document, and that is probably what has happened to
you.

However, I would like you to check a couple of things first:

1) Go to Tools>Templates and Add-ins and check to see that "Automatically
update styles..." is turned OFF. If it's on, it will make strange changes
to your document each time you open the document.

2) If there are any other section breaks in the document, delete them all.
Chances are that's where the corruption is.

If there are no section breaks in the document, carefully copy everything in
the document EXCEPT the last paragraph mark, and paste that into a new
document.

You will need to remake your headers and footers, but that will fix the
document.

The size of the document has nothing to do with this: it's the complexity of
the objects within it that may create the problem.

I first checked the option you mentioned, but that was unchecked. So the
problem could not be caused by this possibility.
As I'm using rather a lot of sections in the doc, to create difference in
the header and footer layout, I started to delete first the last section (the
problem started because i added some text) anyhow this either didn't help.
So I deleted all docs' sections and the problem was solved.
So far so good, but as I already mentioned I need the section to make some
changes in the header/footer layout. As the layout of my header/footer is
still table based I wonder if the problem can occur again if I add my
sections again without changing the table. Probably the chances will be
rather big to meet this problem again... So do you have an alternative way of
creating some more advanced layout in the header and footer than using a
table, reducing the risk of the original problem?
Are the tab settings in the header/footer independent from the docs' tab
settings? (Just this question as I'm trying to find a good solution).

Stefaan,

Each section can have it's own header/footer tab settings and they are
independent from the main body. I regularly use tables in the headers, but
I avoid using them in the footers where I keep the page/section number
information. As John said, I'd recommend not using them unless you are well
versed in the intracacies of what works and what doesn't.

I suspect that you can accomplish what you need to by using tabs, which will
allow you to keep left and right margins at their edges and also keep
something centered.

Hi Mark,

When the tabs for headers and footers are different in the main body and in
every section, than I'm able to create what I want without a table... So I
think I know what to do the coming hours . Thanks for the information.
