TOC! how to get par nums in TOC???

Hi - I'm really trying to teach myself how to generate a Table of Contents in
our documents! Running Word 2003 in XP pro. I can get my text exact by using
ALT-SHIFT-O to manually mark all entries (we use typical legal hierarchical
paragraph numbering, 1, 1.1, 1.1.1 etc), but how do I get the paragraph
numbers THEMSELVES in the TOC code?? Otherwise the table will not generate
with the numbers - I have been inserting them manually, but if one paragraph
is deleted, the numbers will not update properly. your help is greatly
appreciated!

Hi Scott

For best results, you need to apply the numbering using paragraph styles, and
use those styles to create the TOC.

For more information see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html and
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html.

If you don't want the whole of the paragraph text in the TOC (a common issue
with legal docs) then see
http://home.earthlink.net/~wordfaqs/RunInSidehead.htm.

Alternatively, if you must stick with TC fields, you can 'cheat' by
regenerating the numbering on the TOC styles themselves. Set up an outline
numbering scheme (again, following Shauna's instructions) by modifying TOC 1
style, and linking lower levels of the outline numbering to TOC 2, TOC 3 and
so on. You'll need to set the appropriate level in the TC field.
