TOC messed up after print preview

I am using Word 2003. I seem to have a new problem that is happening on more
than one Word document. And it does not happen to all people that open these
files. When the file is first opened, the table of contents (TOC) is
perfect. But then, if I either do a Print or Print Preview, Word does some
automatic Updating of fields and the TOC gets all goofed up. The page
numbers all go to a single number, typically 1-4. This makes it impossible
to print out my document with a good TOC and is very frustrating. I have
found a kludge to keep this from happening by locking the TOC after it was
created and then the update fields apparently skip the locked fields. But, I
want to know what is causing this and how I can fix it for real. Surely, MS
knows about this and must have an idea what is causing it. I find it amazing
that there are no solutions posted on the web for this problem that has been
around for over 2 years at least.

The usual cause of this is opening a document in Reading Layout view. I
don't recall having seen problems with this being caused by updating the
TOC. However, you can lock the field (to prevent it from updating) using
Ctrl+F11 (Ctrl+Shift+F11 to unlock if needed).

Thank you for the question and subsequent answers. I have just run across this problem myself in Word 07, but locking it worked like a charm!
