TOC Numbering

E

Erica

So now that I have used the technique Jesse suggested to
me yesterday (thank you so much!), my Table of Contents is
confused. It has some topics starting on page 282, but
the numbering within that section only goes to 251. Does
anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks!

Thank you Erica... (i think :)

Perhaps you can share with me a bit of detail.

1. How many actual pages are contained within your
document?
2. Did you use Words, built-in styles for headings, and/or
modify them?
3. How many heading levels did you use to enumerate your
TOC?
4. What was your methodology for inserting section breaks?
Why, if any did you insert them?
5. What type of section breaks are contained in your doc?
6. What is the numbering code you have for pages?
7. Does your TOC match the actual number of pages?
8. If you click a topic in the TOC, is it taking you to
the appropriate page?

Sorry about creating some confusion. Let's see if we can
correct it.

Hi, Jesse;

Thanks for your response. I'll try to answer your
questions the best that I can.

1. According to Word, there are 433 pages within my
document.
2. I did use Word's built-in styles for headings. I did
not modify them.
3. I use three heading levels throughout the document,
and they are used to build my TOC.
4. In this document, we have 7 major sections headings, A-
G. In Section C, there are 8 major subsections. Within
each subsection there are minor subsections (up to 33
within one of the 8 major subsections) where each section
needs to start on its own page, beginning on an odd page.
The page numbering within Section C begins at 1 and go
consecutively to 251, even though we have many section
breaks. This document will be printed double sided, with
odd-even headers/footers.
5. All section breaks are "Odd".
6. I used the { = { PAGE } -#) for the page numbering
that I was having difficulty with yesterday (putting even
page numbers on odd pages).
7. The TOC numbering does not reflect the true numbering
of the document. I have gone through the document and
made sure that within Section C, there are truly 251
pages, where the TOC has calculated 282.
8. Yes. That's what is a bit befuddling to me. When I
click on the page number in the TOC, it does take me to
the appropriate page and topic.

If it's easier, you can send me email.

Thank you SO much for your help, Jesse. I'm about ready
to rip my hair out. And naturally, this is a project that
has to be completed by this afternoon!!!!

Do you have any index entry (XE) fields in the document? Any other Hidden
text? If so, you need to hide it before generating the TOC.

Ah, well, you didn't tell us you were using calculated page numbers. A TOC
never picks these up; it picks up just the { PAGE } field. Instead of using
a calculated page number, you'll need to insert a section break and restart
numbering at 1 where you want page 1.

It was in one of my posts, but that doesn't matter. My
problem is that I cannot start each section with a page
1. I do have to have section breaks, but the page numbers
need to be consecutive throughout the large section. When
I insert an Odd Section break, Word will not allow an even
page number to begin on an odd page. That's where I am
having issues.

Why are you inserting an Odd Page break instead of a Next Page break if you
want it to be an even number?
