TOC Updates upon Print Request

I cannot prevent my TOC from unwanted changes when I print my document in
Word 2007.

Under Word Options|Display|Printing Options, I do not have "Update fields
before printing" selected.

What is causing the TOC to change from what has been saved on the file?

I'm not sure why the TOC updates; usually it shouldn't under the
circumstances that you are describing.

To prevent the TOC from updating you can lock the TOC field: Place the
insertion point in the TOC and press Ctrl+F11. You'll see that the Update
command on the context (right-click) menu is greyed out.

To unlock the TOC, so that it can be updated again, place the insertion
point in the TOC and press Ctrl+Shift+F11.

I've attempted your suggestion, but must be doing something incorrectly. The
page numbers that are continueing to change even on a Print Preview are page
numbers that I've manually corrected in the Table of Contents. They are the
final 5 entries, and I've created TC fields for the pages that are created
externally in a separate application.

When I perform the Ctrl+F11, the Update field is not greyed out, as you
describe. Is there an option/setting that may prevent the Lock from being
enforced?

It may be a little more tricky in Word 2007 which, by default, places the
table of contents inside a content control. Make sure to select the whole
TOC, including the preceding and following paragraphs, and then pressing
Ctrl+F11 should work.

Note that if you are manually editing the TOC, those settings will be lost
the next time you update it.

Your last suggestion did the trick!! On your first response, you suggested
"Place the insertion point in the TOC and press Ctrl+F11." Perhaps because
ot the content control, I could only disable the "Update Field" option when I
selected the whole field, described in your second response.

Now, the Print features are no longer causing the TOC values to alter.

I understand the consequences of manually editing the TOC. For this reason,
I make it the last step before generating the needed .pdf with the
automatically built bookmarks from the TOC.

Thanks a million for your help. I agree, this should not be happening, but
at least I can force it to stop with your suggestions.
