TOC Won't update in long document please help!

Hi:

In Word XP Pro SP1, Office XP Pro SP2 I have a 199 page long document with a
10-page TOC. After a few edits which added some additional headings, the
TOC will not update.

When Right Click > Update Field, the dialog box may or may not come up
asking for complete or page numbers only update, but regardless, it never
updates.

I tried deleting the TOC and re-inserting it and the message Error! No table
of contents entries found was placed where TOC should have gone.

For a test, I deleted the last 50 pages of the document and renamed it
"...test". I was then able to insert a new TOC. Have I reached the limits
of Word???????? This seems very crazy. Can someone help? I really
appreciate it if you can.

Since your table of contents behave when you've deleted
pages of the document, it seems as though document
corruption is causing the problems.
