TOC

I need to do a Table of Contents. I have a document with
section numbers and then captions. When I generate the
table of contents it also takes in the text after the
caption. I know I have to put in after the caption some
type of style separator. There is one law firm where I
do that and the text of the section does not appear in
the TOC. But they have that "style separator" (that's
what they call it) on a toolbar. What is it that I
insert after the caption. Here's an example of my
document:

1. Reimbursement. The consultant is
authorized to incure such reasonable expenses.

THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP.

Hi,

The 'style separator' would most likely have been a
custom macro set up for the firm where you worked to add
a hidden paragraph mark at the insertion point (or
something similar).

I'm sure I can help if you can answer a couple of
questions:

1 - what version of Word are you using?
2 - are you generating a genuine Word ToC from styles,
table entry fields, heading levels, or a combination? or
are you using an addin (like MacPac) to generate a ToC?
3 - if you are using styles or heading levels, can you
please tell me the style names you're using for the
caption text?

Also - if you'd like to send me the document (if it's not
confidential work product) ... I may be able to fix it
for you on the spot (or send you instructions right away
if you prefer). Happy to help if I can.

I should have added one more question:

By caption -- do you mean the Insert, Reference, Caption
feature, or do you mean -- from the example paragraph you
provided -- that the 'caption' is the heading label
('Reimbursement') in your example -- and you don't want
the remainder of the paragraph after that to appear in
the ToC?

You can find the Style Separator Code (if you have a
fairly new version of Word) by choosing Tools/Customize
and clicking All Commands on the Commands tab. Scroll
down to InsertStyleSeparator and then click and drag it
to your toolbar.
