Select the text and press Alt+Shift+O. This opens the Mark Table of Contents
Entry dialog. If the selected text is what you want in the TOC, then you're
done; just press Mark (or first select a level other than 1 if needed). Or
you can modify the text that will appear so that it is not exactly the same
as what appears in the document; for example, it can be shorter.
This creates a TC field. TC fields are displayed as Hidden text, so as soon
as you insert one, Word will toggle on the display of nonprinting
characters. You can toggle it off with the Show/Hide ¶ button or Ctrl+*, but
it will come back one as soon as you insert another TC field. Just be sure
to toggle it off before you generate the TOC to make sure that the page
numbers will be correct.
When you insert the TOC, be sure to click Options... and deselect "Styles"
and check the box for "Table entry fields."
