Today's date in Memo template

I am trying to create a custom Memo template for Word 2003. I would like it
to automatically fill in the current date in the "Date" field at the top of
the memo, and also have the date repeated in the header of subsequent pages.

But I do NOT want to insert an auto-update Date field, because I don't want
the date to be dynamic. I don't want it to change and show the current date
whenever the document is opened; I want it to be static. But I want it to
be set automatically by the template, to today's date, whenever I create a
new document based on the template.

Is this possible?

Yes, this is possible. You want to use the CreateDate field instead which
will reflect the date the new document was created - not the current date.
Note that when you insert this field in the template you'll see the date the
template was created. That's okay because the new documents will take on
their own creation date.

To access Word fields go to Insert/Fields.
