When trying to open a file, the above erroe message is
displayed and the file will not open. Is it at all
possible to open the file or is it "lost forever"? Any
suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks

Hi Cindy,
You can search Google Groups on your error message
http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search?q=group:*Excel*&num=100
Search all words: "Too Many Different Cell Formats"
author: Leo Heuser

Since the answers you are looking for have been posted by Leo Heuser
I included his name as author for your search as well as shown above
to see if there are updates. There is a later posting but I think the code
in the link below is probably the most up to date.

You can you can look at the fairly useless MS KB article first (old Q163678)
XL: Error Message: Too Many Different Cell Formats
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;213904

code posted by Leo Heuser (watch for line wrap on the link below)
removes unused formats
http://google.com/groups?threadm=Op2qcqh1AHA.2236@tkmsftngp02

You will have to fix the syntax errors in RED after copying because
of line wrapping when posted. You may reduce some additional same
problems by using "View this article only".

Post back if you can't really open the file, others including myself have
been able to open the file, delete a format or two, then install Leo's
code and run it.

Since you posted to misc you may need instructions to install/use a macro

Try this. When you open the file, and the "Open" window
pops up, usually you click Open on the bottom right.
Before clicking "Open", notice the small drop-down arrow
on the right side of the "Open" button. Click the arrow,
and click "Open and Repair". When the nmext box comes up,
click repair. If the file opens as usual, there's
probably nothing corrupted.

David,
Since I was not able to open the file, the macro wouldn't
work. I did find an answer on a different message board.
The link is
http://www.computing.net/office/wwwboard/forum/1064.html

I had to download 602Tab (free) from
http://www.software602.com/products/pcs/ I was able to
open the file in 602Tab, delete a few of the formats and
save as Excel95. I was then able to open the file in
Excel.

Michael - Thanks for your input also but when I went to
the pull-down menu, I didn't have the option for open &
repair.

(I am using Excel 2000.)

Thanks again for your time!!
Cindy
