too many fields defined

I am working in a 97 database, trying to set up
fields...currently have 78 named. My book (for what ever
it is worth) shows that I can have 255 fields in a table
but each time I try to surpass the 78, the information
cannot be updated and saved. Help!

Try a repair and compact. If you have deleted fields, they count against
your total.

Now...what on earth do you need 78 fields for? The largest table I have
worked with was 50, and that was more than a little denormalized.
