Too many fields???

Ruthie Williams

I have a db that I began over 3 years ago and now it will
not allow me to add any more fields. Have tried to delete
old fields and it still will not allow new fields. Also
have tried to edit existing old fields and it will not
change the type of field - text, currency, yes/no, etc.
Does anyone know how I can fix this? and what I did to
make this happen. Thanks.

How many fields does it have and why are you adding more after 3 years?

What difference does it make to you why he's adding new tables after 3
years?

If you've never needed to add tables after a few years time then I take it
that you're too inexperienced to help him out. If you have to ask such
ridiculous questions, I take it you're too inexperienced to help him out.
Do I need to go on or can you just not respond until you get some
experience.

Ruthie,

My response is based on chit-chat in the newsgroups, I haven't hauled out
the specifications for Access for years. If I advise you incorrectly, I
hope one of the wiser children will speak up ...

To get over the immediate hurdle you can open a new database and then import
all of the objects from your existing database into the new one. Once
you've done that you should be able to add fields, so long as the present
total number of fields is less than 255.. Change the names of the databases
and you're on your way.

Since you started the original database you've exceeded 255 fields in your
table. Access only counts fields added and doesn't subtract the number of
fields removed.

Most people would only get into the situation of exceeding 255 fields (even
over a long time) if they were using Access as though it were a flat file,
such as Excel, rather than as a relational database system. I recommend
that you lurk the newsgroups, microsoft.public.access.tablesdesign and
microsoft.public.access.gettingstarted, and dig into table design issues and
data normalization.
