"too many files open" error in word 2004

Hi,

from what i can tell from reading around the internet, there is a known
bug with Tiger and Office 2004 in which one can not save a word file to
a network drive. A message comes up saying that "Word cannot complete
the operation because too many files are open" even when only one file
is open.

I've read that the issue is fixed with the most recent MS service pack
and/or 10.4.6, but I've downloaded and installed both of those to no
avail.

The most recent forum discussions and whatnot I can find on this are a
little old, so I am wondering if anyone has any new info or experience
with this.

This is a five station office, all machines are running Tiger, and the
server is a linux/netatalk box. This is a pretty consistent error, as
far as I can tell it happens all the time, the only work around is to
save file as to the desktop of the machine then move it onto the server
manually.

Hi Pablo:

No, sorry, no "new" information.

There is nothing that completely fixes the problem. We do not know of any
planned fix, from either company.

There are some things you can try here:

http://word.mvps.org/mac/cantsavetoserver.html

But the only thing that will completely stop it is to save the file locally
and use the Finder to copy it to the server.

Cheers
