Hi Jon:
"Too many files open" translates as "I cannot get a file handle from the
server to create one of the files I need to create to complete a save."
If it's happening on the local machine, saving to a local disk, I would use
Disk Utility to Repair Permissions on the Boot Volume, and on the disk
concerned.
Then I would check the permissions of the folders to ensure that each of the
users involved has read/write/execute/remove permissions.
The problem folder is likely to be one of the hidden, temporary folders such
as tmp or temp.
I would try setting the Word preference "Always make backup" to ON. This
changes the locking sequence when saving a file, and may either clear the
problem, or at least produce an error message that tells us where it is.
This issue can also be produced if two or more users have the same Unix ID.
By default, every user gets "501" when they log in. For multi-user use, you
have to ensure that the system assigns each one a unique Unix ID. You could
begin by setting your own to "something else".
Sorry: I can't tell you how to do much of this: Google for it...
Cheers
Word 12.2.1
Mac OS 10.5.6
I'm seeing the error in the subject when saving files to a local disk
into a shared folder.
It's not all documents, but it happens enough that it's frustrating when
it does happen. And there isn't a pattern, that I've discerned.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to resolve this?
I've got a 10.5.8 update on the list of next things to try.
Thanks.
Cheers,
Jon
