Too many Offices - 2 questions

Using Win xp Home
I recently installed Office xp Standard for Students and Teachers Ver
2002 (on a laptop which I purchased from a "friend" some time ago).
I checked for Office updates and at 40% received the message "Error!
Unable to check for updates on this computer..."
I tried all the suggestions on the page without success.
Office xp works well.

On going to "Add or Remove programs" (to remove an unrelated
application) I noticed the following entries:
Microsoft Office 2000 Small Business (no indication of size)
(Clicking on entry shows "Remove")
Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Premium Size 721.00 MB, (yes, 721.00 MB!)
(Clicking on entry shows "Change" , "Remove")
Microsoft Office xp Standard for Students and Teachers Size 175.00 MB

I attempted to remove Microsoft Office 2000 Small Business and could
not insert the program disc when requested as I do not have it and
neither does my "friend".
I found data1.msf on the hard drive, ran it and the following message
appeared" "data1.msi is not a valid installation package for the
product Microsoft Office 2000 Small Business. Try to find the
installation package 'data1.msi'...... "
Ditto the above when I tried to remove Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1
Premium

Looking at program files there is one folder for "Microsoft Office",
containing three folders, i.e.
media (3.82 MB)
Office 10 (112 MB)
Templates (7.65 MB)

What must I do to enable me to Update MS Office?

How do I remove the two entries in "Add or Remove programs" ? i.e.
Microsoft Office 2000 Small Business
Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Premium

Thanks in advance.
