toobar missing from document window

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel How can I get my toolbars to appear in new (and old) documents at the top of the page they way they did in my old Word version? When I click formatting, the menu appears in a separate box and not inside the document window. I cannot drag and drop it in the toolbox the way I used to do...

Not sure what "old Word version" you're referring to, but I don't recall
Toolbars being in the document window in any version of Word ‹ Windows or
Mac ‹ *other* than 2008. They've always been (and still are) dock-able just
beneath the Menu Bar but external of the document window.

At any rate, for your current concern...

Control/Right-Click near the right end of the Formatting Toolbar (or
directly on one of the vertical separators between groups of controls) &
select 'Dock Toolbar in Window".

Additionally, not all toolbars can be Docked. Have a look in View> Toolbars
& you'll see two groups of toolbar names divided by a horizontal separation
line. Only those above the line can be Docked. See the info in Word Help
under the topic: Customize toolbars and menus

Thank you, Bob Jones.
I am slow. And very new to this iMac and Word2008. I have always used a PC and my Word program was about 1997. I did not even know this funny little mouse had a right click -- there's no button there -- but you're right. It does!
Following your clues is helpful. I will fool with it tomorrow and go to these places you mention again to increase my knowledge.
I do not know what 'dockable' means. Or to 'dock' a toolbar. I do see the big dock at the bottom of the screen with lots of programs and docs and aps on it.
Does 'dockable' mean something can go there?

The Dock you're referring to is the OS X Dock. It's for 'shortcuts' to
launch commonly used programs, folders & files. See Mac Help for more about
it. You cannot dock program toolbars there... And it probably wouldn't do
you much good if you could :)

'Docking' a toolbar simply means having it anchored in a fixed,
out-of-the-way location rather than 'floating'. Floating toolbars can be
dragged around as you wish to keep them close to your workspace yet be able
to easily move them elsewhere. I think the Help article I referred you to
will answer most of your questions.
