Toolbar buttons disappear upon Visio restart

Paul

I'm using Visio 2003 on Windows 2000. I always put certain toolbar
buttons on the toolbar with the zoom percentage. The buttons I place
there are Zoom-In, Zoom-Out, Whole-Page, and Last-Zoom. I always save
the file I'm working on. Despite all these, whenever I open such
Visio files, those buttons are gone. Do those button placements
require registry changes? I don't have such privilege.

If that is the explanation, it would certainly be odd, since other
buttons do stay put, such as increasing and decreasing the font size.

Another possible hint is that I have to always remove the PDF-Maker
toolbar after restart Visio. Adobe isn't generating any goodwill by
doing whatever they do to be so obnoxious.

Heck, the toolbar customizations dissappear even if I Ctrl-Tab to
another window and Ctrl-Tab back! Arrg.

Don't know if this will make any difference, but, after you have everything
reset the way you want it, do a Save As, and in the lower right corner of
the menu, there is a Save button, click it, and then click Workspace to
select that. Hopefully, this will save your entire setup.

Dude, you need a break! How are you keeping your sanity? You've got so much
going on, do you have time to breathe?

Unfortunately, I don't have any suggestions. Obviously, the behavior isn't
normal, but I don't know where to look for the corruption.

Hopefully, someone else will pick up on this.

Hello Paul,

I haven't tried your specific setup (ie Win 2000) or indeed the
dissappearing items when switching between applications (I take it they
aren't two Visio instances?), but Visio usual 'MO' is to save the toolbar
state as the application closes. Other addins can occasionally interfere in
this process and you can test this by disabling them and seeing what effect
this has on your toolbars.

It is also possible to change Visio's UI at document level, although only
via code. Are your documents 'special' in some way? I'd say this is the
least likely scenario but it's worth asking.

Have a read of this post on the subject:

Let me know how you get on.

Best regards

John

There's nothing about my document that I'm aware of which is special.
*Sometimes*, the toolbar customizations stick, but more often than
not, they go away. No add-ins (very limited permissions). Will take
a look at the taming link. Thanks.

Well, I looked through that and the related links. Any registry
activity is beyond my power. The part about backing up the vsu file
is revealing, but might be hard to act upon because I change the
toolbar constantly. I also float from machine to machine. Thanks
anyway, for the references to what the possible causes might be. It
seems like there are many possibilities!

It already has Workspace checked off. Does this mean that clicking on
plain'ol Save also saves the whole workspace?
