Toolbar buttons Word X

K

kmcdonald24

Please forgive me as I am new to this board AND macs!

I currently work on developing templates on WORD 2000 and other
versions on the PC. I now need to transfer a template to work on a mac.
Specifically OS 10.4 (Tiger) and Word X.

I see that there have been previous discussions regarding custom
toolbar buttons - but many of those threads are older and much of the
feedback has been about providing Microsoft with Feedback.

I cannot seem to create (or even paste) any custom toolbar icons to my
macrobuttons in Word X. According to this board, it appears as though
this is a WORD X problem (bug).

I had worked on a template on the mac a few years ago and don't
remember this problem.

1. Did this problem exist with earlier version of Word?
2. Has Microsoft fixed Word X and I just don't have "the patch"?
3. Or did Microsoft not fix the problem in Word X and just fix it in
Word 2004?

Any updated help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. I nee to
inform a customer about what I cannot do and I want to make sure it is
a software bug - and not ME!

Thanks,
Kathleen

Hi Kathleen:

There are three layers to this problem :)

1) It's not a bug. Word Mac does not have the Icon Editor that Word PC
has, and never was planned to have.

2) If you have a Mac resource editor, you can create icons for toolbars
that will work. You need to get them exactly the right size because Mac
Word won't scale them, and you need to be careful with colour because Mac
Word X supports only 256 colours.

3) Mac Word 2004 supports a wider range of colours, but still has no icon
editor.

If you create the icons and toolbars in Word on the PC, you can simply move
them across to the Mac and they will work. In Word X, the icons will come
out funny colours unless you limit your colour selection to only those
colours offered by the Word icon editor. In Word 2004, your icons will hold
most of the colours you can get away with on the PC.

Needless to say, I do my icons on the PC :)

Hope this helps

Excellent! Thank you so much for the summary. That is exactly what I
needed. Since I am so new to the mac I really don't know what is not
possible vs. what I have not located yet!

Since you are familar with both PC and mac, maybe you could answer my
next item - again with the icons in toolbars.

I create both MENUS and TOOLBARS in a (PC) Word Template. I attach
custom icons to macros in each. When I move the template to the mac,
only the icons that are in TOOLBARS appear. When I am on the mac, I
choose customize and select the MENU. The icon graphic shows up in the
dialog box, but it does not appear on the menu.

Is this normal on the mac?

Thanks again!
Kathleen

Good question! I hadn't noticed that: I believe Mac Word does not ever
show icons in Menus. I don't think it has the ability to display icons in
menus.

But I have to confess I never noticed and I am not sure :)
